(Los Angeles) Teacher Louis Pugliese, candidate for Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, has announced that he will mount a legal challenge to block his opponent's use of the term "educator" on the proposed ballot for the upcoming March, 2009 election. Nury Martinez, who is the Mayor of San Fernando and the executive director of a non-profit environmental advocacy group, has chosen the ballot title "Mayor/Environmental Educator" as her occupational designation. The City Clerk refused to review the designation after Pugliese complained that it was misleading.
"For voters, candidate ballot descriptions carry a lot of weight." Pugliese said. "Since this is an election for the Board of Education, the term 'educator' should be backed with genuine experience as such. An accurate job description will help voters make an informed decision, especially in light of recent questions about the qualifications of top district leadership."
A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, December 24th, at 8:30 AM in the Superior Court, 111 N Hill Street.
